"Dear KidsArt,
We use acrylic varnish in so many art projects that I've lost count. Our favorite is shiny collage. The kids tear colorful tissue paper into small shapes. We mix acrylic varnish about half-and-half with water, then brush it onto a sheet of shiny aluminum foil. Arrange
the tissue in nice patterns and let the varnish soak through. You can sprinkle glitter on top too, or thin strands of thread, small dried flowers, stuff like that.
When dry, the shiny collage is dazzling. It makes
wonderful background and giftwrap paper!" from Stephanie in PA

Acrylic Varnish
Water soluble. Non-toxic. Safe for kids to use. This is a great varnish for all childhood art projects. Thinned with water, this 8 oz. bottle goes a long way! Acrylic varnish adds a shiny final coat to:
- Clay...use it with Sculpey Porcelain Clay, DAS Terracotta Clay, Polymer Clay 30 Color Sampler, and all playdough and bread dough sculptures.
- Papier mache...paint sculptures with economical Tempera Paint, then when the tempera is dry, finish with a durable coat of acrylic varnish.
- Paintings...finish and protect both Tempera and Acrylics.
- Collage...thinned with water, acrylic varnish makes a wonderful, shiny "glue" for all collage and assemblage projects (see the KidsArt Collage Unit for ideas).
- Sculpture and crafts...to finish wood sculptures and carvings, nature crafts, and much, much more.
