The Blue Lotus was published between 1934 and 1935...when Japanese troops occupied many parts of the Chinese mainland. Herge's story is based on historical events that led to World War II in the Pacific, and the invading Japanese are clearly the bad guys, with all the wartime racial stereotypes intact. Tintin meets his long-time friend Chang on this Chinese adventure.
