Tempera can be mixed with other materials to create thick paint, textured paint, thin washes and more. Add salt, white flour or sand to make thick, textured paints that spread with a stiff paintbrush or palette knife. Add water and a bit of white glue to make a thin "acrylic-like" paint. Paint clay statues, paper mache, 3-D cardboard structures. Tempera is used with nearly every project in childhood art!

A Couple Powdered Tempera Recipes for Adults to Make:
Giant Sidewalk Chalk Mix 1/2 cup plaster of paris (from the hardware store) with 1/3 cup powder tempra paint (combine primary colors to create any color you want). Stir together (be careful that you do not breathe the dust). Slowly add water until the mixture is the consistency of yogurt or sour cream, then pour into a cardboard toilet paper tube standing on end. The mixture will harden right away, but let it dry for several days, then tear the paper away and head to the sidewalks with the chalk. Finger Paint For each color, mix 2 tablespoons cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cold water. Stir until smooth. Then (adults only for this step, please!!!) add I cup boiling water and stir until smooth again. Finally, stir in a teaspoon of powdered tempera (combine primary colors to create any color you want). The cooled fingerpaint can be used on any paper, though shiny white rolls of butcher paper are the best, slippery and satisfying. If you are working with older kids, who will not be tempted to taste the paint, you can add a drop of two of vanilla, or mint, or almond flavoring, a sprinkle of cinnamon or Kool-Aid, a dab of mustard, to add great smells to the experience. Use a different scent for each color. Leftover finger paint can be stored in the refrigerator for awhile. |
