Scratchboard is a wonderful drawing alternative for young artists. Instead of drawing a dark line on paper with a pen or pencil, the kids scratch a line into a black paper to reveal the multicolored undercoat beneath. Scratchboard paper is made with two layers. The top layer is usually black....the bottom layer is multicolored, with bright patterns of red, blue and yellow. To make a picture, you scratch fine lines with the wooden scratching stick (or a variety of other tools, such as bent paperclips). Scratchboard drawing inspires detailed texture and line work, since the more one scratches, the more vibrant and rich the drawing becomes.

Artists use scratchboard to create incredible works of art. You can make your own scatchboard with crayons and India ink (see the free instructions in our Quick Art Lessons section)...but these Multicolored papers from Scratch-Art kick the technique into high gear. The smooth black surface simply begs for scratching, and the quality of children's artwork reflects this irresistable urge.
