"The oldest mexican image, after the Virgen of Guadalupe, is La Salud, in Patzcuaro. About the year 1540 Bishop Vasco de Quiroga ordered her made of cornstalp paste, a specialty of the Tarascan Indians of Michoacan. The pith of the cornstalk is beaten to a paste, to which is added an orchid called tantzingueni to give it body and preserve it from insect damage. The product which results is light and durable and easy to form into statues."

"La mas antigua imagen mexicana, duspes de la Guadalupana, es la de la Salud, en Patzucaro. Hacia el ano de 1540 el obispo Don Vasco de Quiroga la mando fabricar de pasta de caña de maiz, al modo de los indios tarascos de Michoacan. A la masa batida hecha del meollo de la caña, se le añade una orquidea llamada tantzingueni para darle consistencia y conservarla de la pollina. Resulta una materia ligera y resistente, muy propocoa para modelar."
