Paper Sandwich Hats and Helmets
Make your own astronaut's helmet or fancy hat with a simple paper-and-glue sandwich.
Start with two large sheets of paper, at least 12" by 18". White drawing paper, newsprint, giftwrap paper, big sheets of bulletin board paper...any kind of paper works! Paint one sheet of paper with white glue (mix it half and half with water in a small container to make it easier to spread). Place the second paper on top of the gluey paper so the glue is sandwiched between the two sheets.
While the glue is still damp, wrap the paper sandwich over your head. The glue is inbetween the papers, so the paper might be a bit damp but it won't stick to your hair.
Smooth the paper down over the top of your head and let the edges fluff out. Use a piece of yarn or string to tie it at the level of your eyes...tight against your head, but loose enough that you can lift the papers off your head once the string is secure. For a helmet, tie the string even lower...down around the level of your nose covering your eyes.
The papers are now in a perfect "hat shape." Set the damp, rounded papers somewhere to dry overnight, or in a warm place for a couple hours, being careful to keep their shape.
When the paper hat is dry, you can decorate it any way you want. To make a helmet, trim off the floppy brim and cut an opening for your eyes. Glue aluminum foil on the paper. Glue a sheet of transparent plastic wrap in the opening. Add other spaceman decorations, like the foil stars and curley pipe-cleaners in the photo above.
To decorate a hat, trim the floppy brim to a nice rounded edge. Add ribbons, lace and plastic or silk flowers.
