Tessellations
A tessellation is a design that combines art and math. It is a picture made from shape repeated over and over...a shape that fits into itself on all sides.
The simplest tessellation is a tile floor made of little squares.
Other geometric shapes tessellate (fit together perfectly).
Add some design and coloring, and you can create delightful designs like this critter tessellation by Erin and Jenna from Kenston High School in Ohio.
The most famous tessellation artist is M. C. Escher. Discover more about Escher (and 79 other great artists) in the book
Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn Kohl and Kim Solga, available right here on the KidsArt web site.
Learn more about creating tessellations with the on-line Flash animated
Tessellation Tutorial by Jim McNeill.
Find lots of
Tessellation Links on this web page from Suzanne Alejandre at Math Forum (lots of cool on-line math lessons).
You can even enter your art in a Tessellation Contest at
The World of Escher website from Roger Penrose, a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford in England.
Color the designs of M. C. Escher in
The M.C. Escher Coloring Book at the KidsArt on-line store.
