The Expolratorium Bubble CenterBubble Art - 1998
Dialogue by Mark:
Colors oozing out of the Kooky Keyhole, running all over the place...reminds me to take you imaginative young artist gueniuses to visit the Imagination Station Master's Gallery! So come on...get inside the rainbow with me!
Today our work of art is an experience! Really...it's an exhibit that Kim, our Queen of Art History, found for us in The Bubble Center at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. There's all sorts of stuff to do in the Bubble Center. You can make bubbles, tiny bubbles, honeycomb bubble jumbles, wierd shaped bubbles,...and really, really big bubbles! When you look through them, the whole world becomes a work of art.
When light hits the curved surface of a bubble, the light bounces off the front and the back of the thin soap-film wall. As the thickness of the film changes, some colors become bright, others fade away. But when the bubble starts to turn black, look out!...It's going to pop!
Hey, try this! You scientific artists can make your own bubble solution! Just mix 2 tablespoons of good-quality dishwashing soap into1 quart of water. If you want really strong bubbles, add a few drops of glycerine from the drugstore. Kim says that this mixture will work best if you let it sit quietly for a day before you use it.
Thanks to the Exploratorium for the great photos and bubble ideas. If you're in San Francisco be sure to visit this cool, fun museum, and no matter where you are, visit their web site at www.exploratorium.edu for bunches of great games and ideas.
