Hawaiian Clouds and Mountains
This painting uses two special techniques to get its rich textures. The puffy white clouds were helped along by painting the deep blue sky colors, then dabbing the wet paint to uncover white paper underneath. Because the paper was very wet, the blue paint oozed and spread onto the clean paper areas, making soft cloud edges.

The textured green of the trees was made with salt! The young artist painted a thick, wet layer of paint, then sprinkled salt on top. The painting was set aside to dry. Later, when the dry salt was brushed away, it had created the cool leaf-patterns in the green paint.

An important material in paintings like this is good paper made for watercolor painting, like our Watercolor Paper Pad. The paper will stand up to techniques like blotting and salting, has a subtle bumpy texture, and helps make any painting look fantastic!
