Scratchboard is a special kind of art paper with a solid color, like black, on top and another bright color (or many different colors) underneath. You create a picture by scratching into the top surface, which makes bright lines that show the under-colors. This art envelope is handmade scratchboard. The student artist first colored her envelope with bright feltpen colors. Then she heavily coaed the whole piece with thick, black crayon. Finally, she used a sharp tool (like a bent open paperclip) to "draw" her design of balloons and hearts. Luckily she also left clear areas on the paper envelope to write the KidsArt address and her return address..and to stick a stamp.
