A Balloon Print Vase of Flowers

This beautiful picture started with a purple paper vase shape, cut out and glued onto a large sheet of white paper. Crayon shading gave the vase a 3-dimensional appearance. A couple bold strokes of dark paint made stems coming up from the vase. The flowers were created with an unusual printmaking technique...balloon printing! Blown-up balloons were dabbed into plates of orange, yellow and red tempera paint, then the paint-covered balloons were pressed onto the paper. This artwork was sent to KidsArt by Emily Ames, age 10, from Tanner, West Virginia.

Tempera paint is the most popular medium for art education. It's great for printmaking techniques as well as painting. Tempera was used to make the artwork on this page.
