An assemblage is a picture or sculpture that is three dimensional. While a collage (like the Dolphin Collage on page 2 of this KidsArt Gallery) is pretty much flat, an assemblage sticks out. This Parrot Box assemblage is made in a box. A colorful parrot was torn out of a magazine, glued onto thin cardboard and carefully cut out. Yellow paper was put into the back of the box, and a real twig glued from side to side for the parrot to perch on. Tissue paper leaves and strings of knobby green yarn glued on top make the assemblage look like the rainforest where a real parrot might live.
You can use any box to build a three dimensional assemblage. Paint the box first if you want, then glue things inside to create a scene that you like. You can glue things to the back and sides of the box, hang things from the top, stick things across, stand them on the bottom...anything goes with a box assemblage!

The KidsArt Collage Booklet introduces students to many different techniques for exploring collage and assemblage.
